“Iranian ambassadors, consul-generals, and chargé d'affaires held 570 formal and informal meetings across the world to follow up the Mina tragedy,” said Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Consular, Parliamentary and Expatriates Affairs, Hassan Qashqavi, in a meeting with some of the families of Iranian pilgrims of the Mina tragedy, an incident during Hajj rituals in 2015 in Saudi Arabia near Mecca which claimed the lives of around 5000 pilgrims on September 24, 2015 including nearly 500 Iranians.
In this meeting, Ghashghavi recounted the event itself and the aftermath after it like the dispatch of Iranian delegation headed by Health Minister, Hashemi, who had the identification of Iranian pilgrims at the top of their agenda. The official highlighted that around 700 dead pilgrims, including 40 Iranians, were quickly buried by the Saudis and that was why the Iranian delegation was pushing to prevent unauthorized burying of Iranian pilgrims.
“The constructive words of the Leader, along with the concordance between the Iranian officials, speeded up the return of the bodies to Iran,” asserted the Iranian diplomat, “the Consul-General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Jeddah city of Saudi Arabia, as the advocate of the bereaved families conferred with 28 shrewd Saudi lawyers to sue the ones responsible in Mina tragedy and reached good results with two of the lawyers. Also Iran’s embassy in Riyadh managed to arrange Saudi deputy health minister and deputy foreign minister to visit Iran for more talks. All these efforts ended futile after the attack to Saudi embassy in Tehran.”
The senior diplomat maintained that the nature of diplomatic affairs does not allow reporting the media before the full fruit of the operation is reached. He reassured that Foreign Minister Zarif’s talks in New York and the diplomatic efforts of Iranian diplomats across the world have paved the way for good results in the case of the Mina tragedy.
